Our Founders Story

Latin Fest began with a simple but powerful idea — bringing a celebration of Latin culture to Vernon Township.

Vernon Township residents Timothy and Christine Umana first shared the vision of hosting a Latin cultural festival that would highlight the traditions, flavors, music, and spirit of the Latin community. As proud members of that community, they wanted to create an event where families could come together, Latin-owned businesses could be supported, and the broader community could experience the richness of Latin culture in a fun and welcoming way.

When they approached Meg Wahnon with the idea, she was immediately excited. Having helped coordinate and support many community events in Vernon Township, Meg recognized the potential to create something truly special for the town. With her experience in event organization and community outreach, she helped guide the process of turning this vision into a reality.

Together, the team began navigating everything required to launch a brand-new event — learning as they went, securing the necessary town permits, completing filings, organizing logistics, and building connections with vendors, volunteers, and community partners. Through dedication and teamwork, they officially established Latin Fest as a New Jersey Non-Profit Corporation, ensuring the festival could grow into an annual community tradition.

Today, Latin Fest stands as a reflection of their shared passion for culture, community, and connection. As proud members of the Latin community themselves, the founders are deeply committed to creating an event that celebrates heritage, supports local businesses, and brings people together year after year.

While the festival is just beginning, their hope is that Latin Fest will continue to grow into a beloved tradition in Vernon Township — one that celebrates culture, supports community, and creates lasting memories for generations to come.
